Palestini, Stefano

Doctor (PhD) en Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, Instituto Universitario Europeo (Italia), y Master of Research en la misma casa de estudios. Realizó estudios postdoctorales en el Instituto Otto Suhr de la Universidad Libre de Berlín (Alemania). Es licenciado en sociología por la Universidad Alberto Hurtado (Chile). 

Su área de especialización es la política internacional con un foco específico en el regionalismo comparado. Actualmente se encuentra trabajando acerca del papel de las organizaciones regionales en el manejo de crisis políticas, en el contexto del surgimiento de democracias iliberales y regímenes autoritarios electorales en América y Europa. El proyecto analiza los mecanismos a través de los cuáles las organizaciones regionales adoptan y adaptan normas globales de protección de la democracia liberal y el estado de derecho. Otras áreas de su interés son las políticas regionales de desarrollo, la economía política de los Bancos Regionales de Desarrollo, y las políticas regionales de integración energética. 

Stefano ha sido investigador visitante del Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos y Latinos de la American University (Washington, DC), y ha dictado cursos en la Universidad de Chile, Universidad Diego Portales, y en la Universidad Helmut Schmidt (Hamburgo, Alemania). Entre el 2008 y el 2010 fue consultor del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD, Santiago).

Stefano holds a PhD in Political and Social Sciences and a Master of Research from the European University Institute of Florence (Italy). He conducted postdoctoral studies at the Otto Suhr Institute at the Free University of Berlin (Germany). He holds a Licenciatura in Sociology from the Universidad Alberto Hurtado (Chile).


His area of expertise lies in international politics with a focus on comparative regionalism. Currently, he is studying the role of regional organizations in coping with political crises within the context of a rise of illiberal democracies and electoral authoritarianism in the Americas and Europe. The project analyses the mechanisms through which regional organizations adopt and adapt global liberal norms of democracy and rule of law protection. Stefano is also interested in regional development policies, the political economy of regional development banks, and the politics of energy integration.

Stefano has been a research fellow at the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at the American University (Washington, DC). He has also taught at the Universidad de Chile, Universidad Diego Portales, and the Helmuth Schmidt University (Hamburg, Germany). Between 2008 and 2010, he was a consultant at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP, Santiago de Chile).
